Notes

Albert Bridge is a suspension bridge 710 feet long, designed by R M Ordish and opened in 1873. Originally a toll bridge, this proved un-profitable and the toll ceased six years later. The toll booths remain and are the only surviving examples in London.
Nick-named “The Trembling Lady” because it tended to vibrate when large numbers of people walked over it, the bridge has never been replaced, although central piers were added in 1973, strengthening the bridge but perhaps slightly marring its beauty.
At night it is illuminated by 4,000 bulbs, and is among West London’s most striking landmarks. The lights were added in 1951 for the Festival of Britain and help to show off the delicate ironwork and ornamental towers.

Although threatened by demolition many times, it still proudly dominates the Chelsea riverside.
It is Listed Grade II*
