Discovering Clapham

Discovering Clapham
Samuel Pepys, the great diarist, was once described as 'a most curious person'. The friend who called him that meant that he was always eager to find out new things. He visited Clapham many times, and died here in 1703. Discovering Clapham is for curious persons, who want to know more about the place where they live. It describes where Pepys lived and died, and much else.
History can be read in books; for faraway places or vanished civilisations, that may be the main way of recalling them. But the history of near at hand, of the place where you have come to live, can also be discovered by going around and looking.
Clapham changes fast. Discovering Clapham is a snapshot taken at the end of 2006. From it you can learn how it is, and how it came to be as it is, at the time the book was written. New years will bring new perspectives, new discoveries, new knowledge. That is what makes history alive and exciting.
